Enemies
In Risk of Rain Returns, Petrichor V is populated by many hostile monsters which challenge the player and attempt to impede their progress all throughout the game. Enemies give gold and experience on kill, and bosses will drop a single item. Most monsters that are enemies can spawn naturally throughout the game, though there are a few exceptions. Most monsters also have a Monster Log which provides some supplementary lore.

Bosses
Boss-type enemies will drop a common, uncommon, legendary, or equipment item on death. Magma Worms will spawn the item on the player's location to prevent stuck items. Bosses as the Teleporter boss will not drop equipment items.

Elites
Elite monsters are monsters that have additional effects and powers, as well as some boosted stats. Elite bosses are tailored, not every boss can be every elite type, and some of them have special unique effects. Each elite type has a corresponding color, which the enemy becomes. Elites show their healthbars even when not in combat, and they possess an icon indicating what type of elite they are. The Artifact of Honor will force all enemies to spawn as elites.
All base elites have the following:
- 2.8x health
- 1.9x damage
- 30% cooldown reduction
- 2x more gold on death
Elite Types
Blazing
- Have 1.2x movement speed.
- Leave trails of fire behind them.
Overloading
- Attacks cause bolts of electricity to shock nearby.
- Passively shock nearby characters.
Frenzied
- Have 1.25x movement speed and 1.3x attack speed.
- Can instantly teleport to the player's location.
Leeching
- Passively heal nearby enemies.
- Regenerate health when dealing damage.
Volatile
- Every attack causes an explosion.
- Passively fire red homing missiles toward the player.
Blighted
- Can only spawn on
Monsoon.
- Have the attributes of any 2 basic elite types (for a total of 10 combinations).
- Have 7x HP, 3.2x damage, 1.1x movement speed (1.35x if
Frenzied), 50% cooldown reduction and drop 37x more gold on death.
- Turn completely invisible when stationary. Appear in writhing shadows when attacking or moving.
- Always have the subtitle "Phantasm" when selected as a Teleporter boss.
- Can only spawn on
Cognate
- Do not spawn naturally, only appear when killing an enemy with Artifact of Cognation enabled.

- Do not spawn naturally, only appear when killing an enemy with Artifact of Cognation enabled.
Desecrated
- Do not spawn naturally, only appearing as a special enemy in Desolate Forest Variant #4. A Desecrated Rock Golem spawns after hitting 2 buttons in a hidden location in the lower right of the stage.
- Has massively increased health, damage, and movement speed. NEEDS TESTING: It seemingly does not scale its stats over time like other monsters. Also we need the exact stats.
- Spawns with several items. This includes

Volatile, the Desecrated passively fires red homing missiles toward the player. However, this is done at a highly increased rate.
- Defeating the Desecrated spawns the Artifact of Cognation and a
Cognate Rock Golem in its place.
Horde of Many
(MAY NOT BE VERY ACCURATE; NOT COMPLETE)
A group of elite enemies can appear as a Teleporter boss rather than actual boss-type enemies, subtitled "Horde of Many", when activating the Teleporter early enough, or after a lot of time passes. These will still drop an item, but rather only a few will, indicated by a crown above their healthbar.
Examples of early enemy groups can be:
On Monsoon difficulty, this has a much higher chance of happening mid-game due to the
Blighted elite becoming more common.
Version History
- Most enemy attacks are now client authoritative.
- Fixed some monster attacks bypassing player invincibility.
- Reduced the range of overloading enemies.
Trivia
- Commando is presumably the author of the in-game Monster Logs.
- This has never been officially confirmed by Hopoo Games. However, due to the presence of a pistol and a knife being referenced in said logs, and Commando being the one to kill Providence in the Seekers of the Storm trailer, the wiki assumes Commando as the lone survivor who wrote these logs and escaped Petrichor V.
