Whorls are monsters and enemies in Risk of Rain Returns.

Description

Whorls are an aquatic cephalopod species with a deep dark purple coloration and a light purple curled circular shell, with alternating pale cyan lines across it. They have a bright lime-green eye positioned below their shell.

Rather than swimming, Whorls propel themselves through the sunken depths using gas, which seeps through the ground from various crevices and deposits littered throughout Petrichor V's oceans.

Through unknown means, Whorls are able to channel a bright green focused point of energy and expel it forwards by lashing their tentacles outward, creating a powerful beam of energy.

Behaviour

Whorls have above average stats. While slightly behind in toughness compared to Sand Crabs, they attack faster, which when paired with their long range makes them a formidable foe in the Sunken Tomb.

Despite their appearance and method of locomotion, Whorls cannot fly, jump, cross ledges or climb ladders. They are immune to staggers but not stuns.

Whorls can be compared to a weaker Greater Wisp, having similar range but lower damage and health. Often appearing in groups, they make up for these shortcomings by being numerous and covering a lot of ground, forcing survivors to resort to constantly dodge their attacks by jumping or retreat.

Monster Log

Field Notes:

Day 8. I was awoken by an abrupt collision of something hard against my suit. A volley of sensors screamed in my ears as a hairline fracture arced across my vision.

The hard shell of a monstrous "Whorl" nearly compromised my air lock. If I hadn't had a small tube of polymer sealant from the astrotrain I would not be recording this now.

These carapaced organisms propel themselves with some form of gas-propulsion. Despite their similar appearance to the nautili of old, they do not use a bellows-like system for locomotion, but a steady streaming of gas through their curling shell. I wonder if this heavy armor prevents them from attaining higher altitudes, constrained to hover among the land creatures.

Trivia

  • As mentioned in the Monster Log, Whorls resemble real life Nautili, only with much longer tentacles and bigger, simpler eyes.
