Stages

Stages are the different environments you play through in Risk of Rain Returns. All stages are directly returning from Risk of Rain, but they all received new layouts and variations in Risk of Rain Returns. Traveling between stages is done via the Teleporter. Stages are populated by enemies and interactables which facilitate the gameplay loop, alongside Environmental Tools the player may use to maneuver them.

Each "loop" consists of 5 stages, with each step of the loop choosing from a pool of 2 stages, bar the 5th, which only has a single possibility. After the player has passed the 5th stage, the teleporter will change into a divine teleporter, which can instead transport the player to the 6th and final stage when they so choose and begin a second "loop". Each stage has its own unique soundtrack (excluding Ancient Valley and Hive Cluster).

Looping

Looping occurs after leaving the Temple of the Elders by using the Divine Teleporter to return to the first stage. Post-Loop the teleporter will be replaced with the Divine Teleporter allowing the player to go to Risk of Rain at any point. This allows runs to continue indefinitely until the player dies or beats the game.

Once the player loops, many stages will have new enemies added to their spawn pools.
