Difficulty is a central mechanic throughout the Risk of Rain series. Difficulty can be defined two ways: The difficulty setting that you choose at the start of the game, and the ever-increasing difficulty as the timer progresses. Difficulty affects enemy statistics, spawning, chance for them to be Elite and more.

Difficulty Setting

When starting a run, you may pick between three distinct difficulty settings. These difficulty settings do not affect your ability to unlock achievements or complete Challenges, unless specific requirements call upon them.

DrizzleIcon.png Drizzle is the easiest difficulty option, it lowers enemy damage and reduces the speed at which enemies scale with time, and the player starts with 35$.

RainstormIcon.png Rainstorm is the default difficulty, and the one that Risk of Rain Returns is balanced around. Enemy statistics are unchanged, and the timer progresses at its normal pace. The player starts with 15$.

MonsoonIcon.png Monsoon is the hardest difficulty, it raises enemy statistics, the enemies scale faster with time, and it features a unique type of Elite exclusive to the mode, the Blighted Icon.png Blighted elite. The player starts with 15$.

In the "Rules" tab to the right of the character picker, a sub-menu called "Intensity" can be accessed to edit the amount of damage taken by the player and the damage dealt by the player. Damage taken can be edited from 10% to 999%, and damage dealt can be edited from 10% to 200%.

Difficulty Scaling

As time passes in a run, the games difficulty will increase, this is known as Scaling and an essential part of the game is learning how to outpace, out-scale, or generally just survive this mechanic.

Additionally, at certain intervals the game will update the title of the difficulty, seen in the top right of the hud. These titles provide benchmarks for the player, signaling that a certain amount of time has passed and labeling the games current scaling accordingly. The changing from one title to the next is signified by a bell tolling. The possible names are as follows:

  • Very Easy
  • Easy
  • Medium
  • Hard
  • Very Hard
  • Insane
  • Impossible
  • I SEE YOU
  • I'M COMING FOR YOU
  • HAHAHAHA
