Petrichor V is the 5th planet orbiting the star Petrichor. It has three moons, Commencement being the largest and most notable due to the presence of Mithrix.

It is the settings of Risk of Rain (2013), Risk of Rain 2, and Risk of Rain Returns.

A mysterious, uncharted world, this planet was first set upon by humanity when the UES Contact Light was asked to go towards the planet by an unidentified signal. The violent sabotage and crash of the Contact Light, as well as the subsequent struggle of its surviving crew, serve as the premise of Risk of Rain (2013) and Risk of Rain Returns. The UES: Safe Travels returns to the crash site of the Contact Light as the premise for the sequel, Risk of Rain 2.

Appearance

Petrichor V is a very diverse world, consisting of dense forests, enormous fungal caverns, snowy mountain peaks, vast oceans and islands floating freely in the sky. The fauna of the planet is equally as diverse, yet seemingly united in their violent hostility towards the crew of the Contact Light. It is no sort of territorial dispute or desire to scare off the Contact Light's survivors - the monstrous denizens of the planet relentlessly pursue them. Documents of the native life recall peaceful and gentle creatures, who would turn savagely violent upon seeing a human.

The fauna was brought to this world by Providence, there are several monuments built in Providence's honor. Providence presumably commanded all the denizens of the planet to kill the remaining survivors after he took down the Contact Light, which he mistakenly thought was meant to rescue his brother, Mithrix.

Petrichor V is roughly the size of Mars.[1]

Trivia

  • Petrichor is the name of the earthy smell produced by rain after a dry period.[2]
  • In planetary naming convention, planets are designated by the name of their star followed by the Roman numeral of their orbit's position in the star system, counted from the star outwards. Following this convention, Earth is named Sol III. Likewise, Petrichor V would be the fifth planet in the planetary system of the star Petrichor.[3]
  • 'Petrichor V' was originally a name given to the planet by fans, based on a track of the same name from the Risk of Rain 2 Soundtrack. It has since been officially adopted as the canonical name.[4]
    • Prior to this, the developers had used 'The Planet,' for simplicity and ease of access during discussions.
