Trokks are monsters and enemies in Risk of Rain Returns.

Description

Trokks are unusual soft-tissued arthropod creatures that resemble tall stone pillars. They either repurpose natural rock, soil, and sediment into camouflage and armor, or somehow develop tough stone-like exoskeletons naturally. Aside from their rocky exterior, they possess a singular glowing horizontal slit-eye at the base of their bodies, where their four insectoid legs are present.

Trokks are ambush predators, waiting for prey to get close to them before quickly burrowing underground and appearing below them to crush them with their two massive mandibles. They apparently lack a digestive system, with their long mandibles measuring several times their base body size. If not for sustenance, it is unknown what purpose Trokks have for hunting prey.

While not after prey, Trokks move extremely slowly, only slightly faster than the Bramble, presumably due to the sheer weight of their outward shell.

Behavior

When the player is distant, Trokks will bury beneath the ground and reappear close to the player and bite them.

Trokks will attempt to predict player movement when burrowing, and appear slightly in front of whatever direction they're moving.

They do not naturally have a "hidden" state, like Tubers, which when paired with the Trokk's extremely sluggish method of attack, makes them extremely predictable.

Trokks possess the same health as a Rock Golem, and are immune to staggers when not performing their attacks. This means that Trokks are most dangerous when the player is distracted, such as when dealing with a horde or a boss.

Field Notes:

While resting in the shade of a massive tree, I was startled at what I thought was an earthquake. The ground shifted beneath my feet and I was suddenly thrown into the air. Beneath me was the gaping maw of a Trokk, and if I weren't already gripping my pistol it would've crushed me into sheet metal. Beyond the stone exterior of this strange walking log is some kind of vulnerable flesh like the inside of an alligator's mouth. With no space for a stomach I shudder at the thought of what happens to its victims.
