Tubers are monsters and enemies in Risk of Rain Returns.

Description

Tubers are a type of animate fungus that acquires nutrients by hunting prey in an ambush predator fashion.

They are quadruped in nature and resemble an upside-down turnip in appearance.

They have a unique protrusion at the top of their heads that bears three burgundy-colored spherical growths, the largest one up highest.

The Tuber hunts by digging itself down until just the protrusion on its head pokes out, sporting its berry-like growths to lure prey.

Once the Tuber detects prey from the seismic vibrations, it will launch out of the ground and use its powerful jaws lined with four oversized conical teeth to attack.

Behavior

Tubers will burrow into the ground and stay in a passive state until a player comes near them. When in this state, they take half damage from all attacks and cannot be targeted by homing projectiles. This state cannot be interrupted by damaging them. Once a target enters a Tuber's range, or enough time has passed without one, it will leap out of the ground and lunge towards them to attack.

Once uprooted, Tubers will behave similarly to Rock Golems or Sand Crabs, moving towards survivors and attacking once in range. In this state, they cannot be staggered but can be stunned.

Field Notes:

The Tuber is reminiscent of the small plants I cared for back on the ship, Nestling themselves deep in the ground, they hide from prey and wait for vibrations to initiate their fanged attack. Like fighting a giant antlion, sometimes the best strategy was to lure them out by tossing spent magazines. I tried stones and other bait, but their responses to the bait seemed dependant on some unseen quality. The behavior of the beasts on the planet continue to concern me I feel like all eyes are on me despite how natural these animals seem from a distance.

Trivia

  • Tubers were first conceptualised and considered for Risk of Rain 2 as seen in the credit sequence.
    • In this phase it was called a "Rootling".
