Archer Bug are monsters and enemies in Risk of Rain Returns.
Description
Archer Bugs are large, turquoise flying four-legged arthropods with pale yellow-orange wings and four green glowing compound eyes. They have two black antennae and four black legs.
They build nests with no known purpose, presumably for reproduction and eusociality. This makes them similar to eusocial Earth insects, such as bees or wasps.
Archer Bugs possess an enlarged abdomen, from which they’re able to excrete and forcefully shoot out caustic spit.
Behaviour
Archer bugs are a fast, horde type enemy meant to be especially dangerous in groups.
They fly perpetually, passing through obstacles, attempting to align themselves in a circle around the player.
Archer bugs attack by shooting evenly-spread triple projectile spit that individually deals low damage.
Archer bugs cannot be staggered, but can be stunned and knocked back.
Archer bugs often spawn in groups, so while their individual stats are rather low, their triple shots multiplied by their quantity can quickly deny areas and restrict movement, forcing survivors to maneuver around their shots dexterously and making them a high priority.
Spawning
- Hive Cluster (After finding the Bloated Survivor and obtaining the Dead Man's Foot. All subsequent runs will only spawn a trio of Archer Bugs.)

Such aggravating creatures! These insects come in droves- as a group their wings create a maddening whine. Even the other creatures seems disturbed by their presence. Though they are not particularly strong, the circling insects certainly frustrate me.
A small amount of their projectile spit managed to penetrate one of the layers of my suit. It was extremely caustic. A festering rash has formed in the area, but doesn't seem to be spreading.
Trivia
- Despite their name and appearance at a first glance, Archer bugs are not actually bugs. True bugs, from the order Hemiptera, all possess 6 legs and at least 2 sets of wings, one of which is armored. Archer Bugs would be closer to bees and wasps, which are classified Hymenoptera, if it weren’t for the Archer Bugs’ 4 legs instead of 6.
