Macrobic Predator are monsters and enemies in Risk of Rain Returns.

Description

The Macrobic Predator is a large highly developed macroorganism with arthropod-like features.

The Macrobic Predator displays a multitude of qualities common among regular fauna, which include a visible mouth with teeth present inside it lined with four pincers, two on each side, along with several antennae-like appendages that penetrate their cell barrier along their entire body, and four anthropomorphic arms.

Macrobic Predators are able to retract their membranous exterior near the front of their mouthpart, and fling their red, fleshy mandibles at prey.

Behaviour

Macrobic Predators are tough, fast combatants that can attack both horizontally and vertically.

Macrobic Predators Attack by extending their mandibles towards the player. Depending on their position relative to viable targets, Macrobic Predators will attack either horizontally, or if their target is above/below them, vertically. These attacks can go through terrain.

The Macrobial Predator's multidirectional attack

Macrobic Predators are one of two "Macrobial Creatures" in the game, the other being the Macrobe. This quality grants them a regenerating shield that must be damaged first before being able to hurt their health bar.

Monster Log

Field Notes:

Some kind of massive insect, this creature snaps like a viper and skitters like an ant. It shouldn't be possible at such a scale to move so abruptly and yet it does. Similar to the Macrobe, this monster is some kind of predatory cell. With a massive rope of nerves at its core, I can only image it acts on instinct alone. I dug into a corpse to see if the spinal rope could sustain me in this toxic hive, but I found my arms stuck to the thick membrane and I had to use my knife to remove the non-newtonian gel. It'd make a great trap for prey, but I don't have time to test that theory.

Trivia

  • "Microbe" is a word of French origin, which is composed of the Latinized form of Greek words Mikros and Bios. Literally meaning "Small life".
    • "Macro" comes from the Greek Makros, meaning "Large-scale". Which is fitting as this enemy is an enlarged single-celled organism.
    • Unfortunately, the term, badly coined by 19th century French physician and surgeon Charles-Emmanuel Sédillot, actually translates to "Short-lived".
