The Experiment is a challenge in Risk of Rain Returns. It is completed by subduing the chained creature after releasing them from their crate. Completing the challenge unlocks the survivor 
Acrid.
Tips
- Acrid's crate can be found on stage variants 1, 2 and 3 of Sunken Tomb, all the way in the top-right of the map.
- NPC Acrid (detailed here) is very similar to survivor Acrid, though does not use Epidemic. The main advantage the player has over NPC Acrid is that the AI is not as proficient at combining its special abilities, which is one of the strongest aspects of Acrid's loadout. Despite that, the stun can still be deadly and poison should be avoided at all costs. To mitigate these negative effects, healing items, particularly

Heal quickly when standing still for 2 seconds.
After standing still for 2 seconds, heal for 4.5% (+4.5% per stack) of your health every second to yourself and nearby allies., are useful in this fight at higher difficulties to avoid rapid health depletion.
